I’m Sam Adams
I’m Sam Adams
Our mayor-elect has everything, it seems: political savvy, charm, and of course good looks. But what would he say to Portland if, oh, he were a member of a boy band? We find out in this week’s song, “I'm Sam Adams.” My dream was originally to have Sam perform the lead vocal on this one, but I’m told by those in the know that his singing voice is nothing to write home about. Not that mine is either, but for this week I’ll stand in for Sam in the singing department.
Incidentally, someone this week told me that they’ve always thought the way to instant fame was either to write a song about Thanksgiving (since aside from Adam Sandler no one has done that yet) or to write a song about Oregon or Portland. I told him I’d written, oh, about thirty songs about Portland at this point, and still no fame. Ahh, well...
Lyrics:
The 20th of May you called to me,
You made my life sublime.
The feeling of that special day --
Well, I can’t explain it in rhyme.
You gave me a gift, something so magic
I’d never imagined before.
You didn’t give your heart to me,
But something even more.
You filled out the ballots, you voted for me:
Now I am your man.
So, let me take a minute to tell you
Exactly who I am:
I’m Sam Adams, Portland’s future mayor.
I’ve got a vision for Portland, and I hope I’ll see you there.
I can’t tell you how it felt when you said,
“Sam’s the one for us.”
I’ll make sure to do my part,
Since in me you’ve placed your trust.
I’m not here to change you, I’m not here to mold you,
I don’t think that you are clay.
You’ve been on the Potter’s wheel too long --
It’s the start of a whole new day.
You filled out the ballots, you voted for me:
Now I am your man.
So, let me take some time to thank you
For making me what I am:
I’m Sam Adams, Portland’s future mayor.
I’ve got a vision for Portland, and I hope I’ll see you there.
I’m Sam Adams, thank you for electing me.
I’ve got a vision for Portland -- let’s make it a reality.
I’m Sam Adams, Portland’s future mayor.
I’ve got a vision for Portland, and I hope I’ll see you there.
