I Love Margie Boulé
I Love Margie Boulé
For those of you who might be wondering, no, Margie Boulé didn't put me up to writing this song! Although she has been very kind to the Portland songs project, writing an article back in September 2007 about Portland: The Album and my family's move back to Portland, and then another article just today that included this current blog project in it, I knew and loved Margie Boulé long before I ever thought of writing songs about Portland. Like many Portlanders, I have been a regular reading of Margie's columns, and that was true back when I was in high school (the early 1990s) and before. Honestly, I can't remember a time when she wasn't in The Oregonian, although I know she hasn't been there quite as long as I have memories.
Anyway, this week's song, "I Love Margie Boulé," is a tribute to everyone's favorite columnist at The Oregonian, and my own way of saying thank you to her for supporting this project. Thanks, Margie! (Now I just hope she enjoys the song.) I suspect that many of Margie's devoted readers can identify with the lyrics.
For you fact-finders out there, listening to the words of this song: yes it's true that I've never met Margie, although we have talked on the phone. No, it's not true that I drink coffee in the morning. Enjoy!
Lyrics:
Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday are my favorite days,
I wake up in the morning with a smile on my face.
I make my morning coffee and I go outside --
The Oregonian's been there since some time before five.
I open up the paper just to make a connection,
Go past the front page to the Living section,
She's waiting for me there and I have to say,
There's a song in my heart -- I love Margie Boulé!
(Margie Boulé -- love her!)
Reading her columns is like seeing a friend,
About a thousand words, but I don't want it to end.
For so many years, she's brought the news to our eyes.
Her columns pack a punch or a little surprise.
I feel like I know her, though we've never met --
She's the kind of a person that you don't forget.
If Billy Joel lived in Portland, he'd sing "She's Got a Way,"
And I guess that's why -- I love Margie Boulé!
(Margie Boulé -- love her!)
She's funny and she's classy
And she's witty and she's sassy
And she's wily and she's caring
And she's hopeful and unsparing.
She's a writer and a fighter
And an injustice righter,
A community builder,
So don't be bewildered when I say --
I love Margie Boulé!
(Margie Boulé -- love her!)
I love Margie Boulé!
(Margie Boulé -- love her!)
