Did you ever wonder how whole songs can be sung by just one person? Read (and listen) on...

Multitracking 101

Barry Manilow did it (think of “One Voice”).  Madonna does it all the time.  Bobby McFerrin became famous with it.  Multitracking (or multitrack recording) simply means that an artist records vocals on one track, then goes back and records new vocals to go with the first set on a new track.  This can go on and on, and it was how all of the songs on this site were made by just one person using just one microphone.  (For sheer trivia, the song on with the most tracks is “Californication,” on Portland: The Album, which has twenty-six.  The song with the fewest is “Oregon, My Oregon,” with only four.)
